Description: Landscape Design

Date: June 2012

Working with developers to create a landscape as the setting for a proposed Estate. The site already has some wonderful trees and a large lake, which are to be retained, however care needs to be taken to use these assets to their full potential and create a private and beautiful Estate for the new owners which is also environmentally sensitive. The design takes its lead from the existing layout, features and character of the site, keeping formal elements close to the house which fade into the more natural areas of the garden.

The driveway sweeps into the site with views over the water, then curves around the proposed woodland to give a surprise view of the house and a dramatic entrance over the extended lake. An ornate fountain marks the arrival at the house and allows for vehicles to be directed either to a parking area or to the exit driveway. The excavations from the lake extension would be used to create an island as a focal point from the house, while also shielding views of the house from properties near to the site boundary. Follies and themed garden areas have been used to create interest, views and destinations around the site.

The garden to the rear of the house has been kept formal near to the house, with a terrace area extending along the full length of the building, descending into a planted parterre area. A formal avenue of trees leads out into a large area of lawn, divided by a linear hedge to separate the formal lawn from a more natural grassland area surrounded by mature woodland. Large urns or sculptures could be used to create interest within the hedgeline, whilst views over the hedge to the mature woodland and a destination folly would create the desire to explore the gardens further.
